Work Experience
I grew up in a boarding school in Belfast. Here I had to live with 50 other children of all ages. When I was in sixth form, I was elected head boarder and in my role I had to speak on behalf of the children and make sure their concerns were heard and changes were made. I also had to carry out duties, such as supervising the children doing their homework and help them with it, helping with supper and help putting the children to bed. I think that this experience is what made me realise that I want to work with children and made me decide to be a teacher, and through doing this I developed skills that are helping me now in my training.
I have also done a lot of voluntary work. I have worked in special schools in Northern Ireland and one in Germany. Through this I developed communication skills and I have overall become more aware of the difficulties people with special needs face. I have also volunteered in a nursing home which I really enjoyed.
I worked voluntarily at the Special Olympics when they were held in Northern Ireland. I was in the accommodation team, so I help organise food and accommodation for the athletes. I really enjoyed this as I got to work as part of a team and I loved meeting the athletes.
As part of my Primary Education course I have worked in primary schools in Manchester. In my first year, I worked in the reception class at Heald Place Primary School. In my second year, I completed my placement in Abingdon Primary School in a year 5 class. I also completed a one week special needs placement at Hawthorns Primary School. Last year I worked in a nursery class at Queens Road Primary School. I then applied for an extended special needs placement, which I was chosen for and therefore completed a further placement at Lisburn School. I love my school based training as it gave me the opportunity to get hands on experience of teaching and everyday school life.
Hobbies and Interests
I enjoy doing voluntary work as I find it extremely rewarding. I also enjoy my school-based training I do as part of my primary education course.
I enjoy sports. I went horse riding for ten years and still enjoy going occasionally. I also recently did a sky dive with the MMU sky diving team.
As part of my course at MMU I am specialising in music and drama. I am looking forward to using the skills I have gained from these subjects in my school based training.
I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I am very outgoing and love socialising and meeting new people.
