I have just completed my Psychology degree at the University of Chester where I specialised in Clinical and Counselling Psychology and Developmental Disorders. I worked for Mencap (part time) for two years and the challenge that I faced when working with the children was a fantastic learning experience. I worked with the children on a one-to-one basis, as well as holding a Saturday club for a larger group of the children. Many of them had complex needs and had both physical and mental disabilities. I feel that my time with Mencap improved both my responsibility skills and organising skills. The experiences and training that I have been fortunate to complete has given me the confidence on handling challenging behaviours in various situations. I feel incredibly confident in my ability to deal with such changing situations.
I am currently working for the company StarCare Ltd where I work as a support worker on a one-to-one basis with a young woman with cerebral palsy. I help complete the tasks that she is unable to do due to her disability and not only provide personal care but also help her increase her independence, and her social life. This job has given me immense satisfaction and has taught me that through patience and optimism you can improve the life of those around you.
I am also a volunteer for Chester Young Offenders where I work with young offenders on panel orders and help them to complete their orders. This too has been a great experience and has added to my confidence in dealing with often uncomfortable, and at times dangerous, situations. My training in dealing with challenging behaviour has certainly been used. Volunteering for the YOT team has allowed me to work alongside those who are involved within the CAMHS team which has helped improve my awareness on key issues.
As a person I am extremely active, I have a great work ethic and enjoy being kept busy at all time. As a keen sports player I have learnt the art of working as a team. I am organised and well disciplined and as captain of the school hockey team, and a national synchronized swimmer, this demonstrates my leadership and teamwork capabilities, alongside huge dedication and commitment which I take with me in the work place. I was also appointed Head of House at school which developed my ability to communicate effectively with both teachers and students and to value reliability. I am also fully up-to-date with all first aid training.
Having completed my psychology degree I hope to continue in developing my knowledge in the area of mental and physical disabilities in children and adolescents. I am extremely motivated in this field and have taken a particular interest in the area of mental health and developmental disorders. During my degree I have completed two detailed assignments one on children with Down Syndrome and the other concerning women with eating disorders. Having worked with children, and adults, with disabilities for the last three years I hope to continue in doing so and improving my skills. I hope to continue in working within a community and helping those who need more help than others. I am a caring, patient individual and from my experience working with those with disabilities I have became a better communicator. I am looking to extend and expand my experience, particularly taking my skills into a school setting and working with children with special educational needs. I am extremely interested in working as an educational psychologist in the future and I hope to complete my Doctorate in this area. I love to learn and to be faced with a challenge, meeting new people and working in new surroundings has always excited me and I look forward to seeing where my passion for life can take me.
